Title VI

Title VI is a federal law that protects persons from discrimination based on their race, color or national origin in any program or activity that receives federal financial assistance. Title IV ensures that a school district will provide the same opportunities for the above students to participate in programs and classes to the same extent afforded to others.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 says that “No person…shall, on the grounds of race or ethnicity, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education.”

Title IX

Each student and employee has a right to learn and work in an environment that is free from unlawful discrimination. No District student or employee shall be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to harassment or other discrimination in any academic, extracurricular, research, occupational training, or other program or activity on the basis of actual or perceived sex, sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity or expression. Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination/harassment on the basis of disability in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. The District has specific responsibilities related to the provision of a "free appropriate public education" (FAPE) to school-age individuals with disabilities under Section 504 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
