Dear Hamlin families,
I want to share an important school update.
The union representing District support staff such as custodians, aides, bus drivers, and cafeteria workers – SEIU Local 99 – has announced a three-day strike beginning Tuesday, March 21 to Thursday, March 23. The union representing our teachers and other instructional and mental health staff – United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) – has advised their members to support their SEIU colleagues, which means teachers may not be available to provide classroom instruction.
If the strike moves forward as our labor partners have indicated, Hamlin will most likely be closed to students from March 21 to March 23. If SEIU moves forward next week, then our open house will be rescheduled for Tuesday, March 28th, and our afterschool tutoring program will be canceled on March 22nd-23rd. Below is information and resources for families should the strike occur and our school is closed to students.
We are preparing materials to ensure student learning continues. Students in grades TK-2 will receive a device and a packet that will include activities.
Students in grades 3rd-5th will complete activities in Schoology at lms.lausd.net.
If the strike occurs, will also be hosting virtual office hours on March 21st-23rd:

Kids Heart Challenge
Our Kids Heart Challenge program will continue this week. Our goal is to have 100% of our school families join the team and learn Hands Only CPR through Finn’s Mission. Don’t wait, get started TODAY! Students who join the team early will get recognized at our kick-off!

School Tour
Our next school tour will be held on Thursday, March 30, at 8:30, where we will be showcasing Hamlin for prospective students. Should you know of anyone interested in finding a school for the fall, please forward this information. We look forward to expanding our Hamlin family.
Afterschool Intervention (Due to the STRIKE, we will connect after Spring Break?)
Families may pick up meals for their students at Grab & Go sites on Tuesday, March 21 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Six meals per student will be provided at pickup, to cover breakfast and lunch over three days.

Our Afterschool Intervention for the Spring term will begin on March 13 through May 8 and will run for 8 weeks. Please remind your students to attend the afterschool intervention on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 - 3:30.
Virtual Afterschool Enrichment
Our Virtual Afterschool Enrichment begins on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. Please be sure to return the permission slip if your child received one last week for this program. We will hold the virtual meetings at Hamlin and students will access the program via Zoom.
Acceleration Days
Please join us for Acceleration Days on April 3rd and 4th for hands-on learning and instructional support for your student. Acceleration Days feature engaging subjects like science, technology, culture, the arts and more. Acceleration Days also provide personalized support to students in reading and math. All students are given healthy and nutritious meals. Students also have the option of enrolling in after-school programs.

Drop off/Pick
Please be sure to drive safely during drop off and pick up. Follow all traffic laws and be patient. We want all of our Hamlin students to get to and from school safely at all times.
Lost and Found
Please be sure to check the lost and found for any items your child may have misplaced or left behind. We will be making another donation during Spring Break with any unclaimed items.
Covid Testing
We will be sending home a covid test with your child before Spring Break. Please note that the expiration date is approaching on the packaging, but the tests are still valid for next 90 days from the date on the box. We will need each student to test upon returning to school after the break. Any positive test results must be uploaded on the Dashboard. There is no need to upload a negative test result.
